AGIIS Update

Building for Tomorrow

By Josh Wall, AgGateway AGIIS Product Manager

AgGateway’s Ag Industry Identification System (AGIIS) has been a foundational building block for many eConnectivity implementations in the agricultural industry for more than a decade. Throughout this time, there have been minimal changes to the underlying technology of the service. Therefore, AgGateway has made the decision to move forward with a plan to modernize AGIIS, which will be completed in two phases. The first phase began June 1 and will finalize at the end of October. Phase 1 will incorporate the latest technology and upgrade the underlying framework to extend the features and functionality of the AGIIS platform moving forward.

Phase 2 will be a “to be determined” user enhancement that will leverage the functionality of the new platform. Brainstorming for Phase 2 kicked-off at the AgGateway Mid-Year Meeting last month, as I introduced the concept of the user enhancement at each individual council meeting and requested valuable feedback. Each council or AGIIS subscriber can submit a user enhancement to the Directory Oversight Committee for review. Once an enhancement has been selected, requirements gathering will be conducted and the level of effort of the enhancement will be estimated. AgGateway would like to have the enhancement identified and preliminary requirements gathered in parallel with Phase 1 so it can be presented at the AgGateway Annual Conference in November. Implementation of Phase 2 is tentatively scheduled for first quarter 2019.

Phase 2 is an opportunity for AgGateway members to begin building for tomorrow, leveraging the basic building blocks of unique identifiers and expanding functionality for the future, such as developing APIs (Application Programming Interfaces) that can be used by machines in field operations. The possibilities are many, and now is the time to begin building.
