How Artificial Intelligence and Data Standardization Are Reshaping the Future of Agribusiness

Embrapa Digital Agriculture (Campinas, Brazil) hosted AgGateway's in-person Member Meeting in July, bringing together around 35 highly qualified professionals for a day of discussion, solution-sharing, and hands-on training — a clear demonstration of the power of technology-driven, collaborative membership.

The meeting was built on three pillars:

  1. AI Regulation in Agriculture — From Theory to Operation. I was thilled to moderate a panel featuring three regional experts. Cristina Godoy Bernardo de Oliveira, PhD, compared global regulatory frameworks (the EU AI Act, Brazil's Bill 2338/2023) and highlighted the importance of categorizing "AgData" (personal, production, and strategic) to protect intellectual property and mitigate legal liability risks. Cassia Mendes, PMP, presented Embrapa's pioneering ethical self-regulation strategy, built on good governance practices throughout the AI lifecycle to fill the current legislative gap. And Marlon Rosa offered a ground-level view from forestry and agricultural operations, showing how the shift from mechanization to digitalization addresses labor shortages and boosts competitiveness, despite infrastructure bottlenecks such as rural connectivity.
  2. Embrapa Innovation Showcase. Five technologies already delivering practical impact included the following: Zarc (Agricultural Climate Risk Zoning, covering 40+ crops), the AgroAPI Platform (simplified data and model integration for new digital applications), the Semear Digital Project (technology democratization for small and mid-sized producers), Embrapa Trace (transparent, secure agricultural supply chain traceability), and UMIPI GenClima (genomic biotechnology for climate adaptation).
  3. Hands-On Digital Literacy. The afternoon featured a free mini-course, "Generative AI Tools for Everyday Use," delivered by Embrapa, aimed at an immediate productivity boost for members.

Also worth noting: on 26 August, I was honored to take part in a panel on data interoperability and governance during Digital Agriculture Day (Dia da Agricultura Digital), held at Embrapa Digital Agriculture.
