A perhaps little-known fact is that it’s common for teams of AgGateway members to prepare papers and presentations for various technical conferences and industry events. This practice dates back to the SPADE days (you must be logged in to the Wiki to access this link) and earlier as teams began to work out ways to handle different issues related to agricultural field operations data interoperability.
These papers help to spread awareness through industry and academia. This helps drive common understanding and promote collaboration as well as educate the next generation of engineers, product managers, and software developers. Academic papers also serve as helpful references for future work since many of the concepts laid out are foundations upon which other work can be built.
This year a team took this tradition one step further and was able to get a paper focused on the Modus agricultural lab testing data standard published in the peer reviewed journal Communications in Soil Science and Plant Analysis. The paper was originally presented at the 18th International Symposium on Soil and Plant Analysis. And we were delighted that it was selected from the conference proceedings to be published as part of the ISSPA Collection in the journal.
In the past most papers have been included in conference proceedings but generally do not go through the peer review process. With this paper being published in a journal it will have broader reach and can be more easily referenced. One of the co-authors has already cited it within a grant application.
Having documents like this help draw in more contributors to the various AgGateway projects in addition to helping make the case for implementation by providing resources people can reference outside of AgGateway GitHub repos or other announcements.
